Euchre

How to play: a short deck — nine up to ace — and you and North play against West and East. Five cards each, and the top of the kitty is turned face up: order it up to make that suit trump, or pass and, on the second round, name a different suit instead. Whoever makes trump may go alone, sitting their partner down for the hand. The two jacks of trump's colour outrank everything: the right bower is trump's own jack, and the left bower is the other jack of that colour, which belongs to trump for the hand. Take three of the five tricks to score a point and all five for two — or four, if you took all five alone. Fail to take three after making trump and you are euchred: two points to the other side. First to 10 points wins.
