How to play: the board deals each word of the brasserie twice — once written properly in French, once as the way it is said or as its English. Tap a tile, then tap its partner: a pair goes in, pays 100 points, and is said aloud in French. Every pair you make without a mistake multiplies the next one, up to five times over, and a wrong guess counts a mistake and puts the run back to nothing — the board ends only when every pair is matched. Clear it and the clock stops; each deck keeps its own best time. Ten decks of 405 words in all.

Every noun on this board wears its article, and that is deliberate. French has no neutral way to name a thing: every noun is masculine or feminine, and the little word in front says which. So the tile reads un steak-frites and une omelette rather than the bare noun, and the gender is learned with the word instead of years later. It is un and une and not le and la for one reason: in front of a vowel the definite article collapses to l’ and stops saying anything at all — l’omelette could be either. Some of it is the deck where that is the whole question: French cannot say "I'd like bread", only du pain, de la soupe, de l’eau or des œufs, and English has no word for the thing being chosen between. Numbers is the other one to own early — seventy is sixty-ten, eighty is four-twenties, and twenty-one is the only number in the twenties that takes an et. A pair already made stays on the board faded; tap it to hear the word again.
