There is no French voice on this machine, so the words are shown but not spoken — the How to play card below says how to add one.

How to play: the board deals each word twice — once written properly in French, once as the way it is said or as its English. Tap a tile, then tap its partner: a pair goes in, pays 100 points, and is said aloud in French. Every pair you make without a mistake multiplies the next one, up to five times over, and a wrong guess counts a mistake and puts the run back to nothing — the board ends only when every pair is matched. Clear it and the clock stops; each deck keeps its own best time. Ten decks of 257 words in all.

French is written in our own alphabet, and that is exactly the trap: it does not use the letters for the sounds an English reader expects. français is "frawn-seh", not "fran-say"; r is a throaty sound, u is a pursed-lip sound and é is the only e that sounds like "ay". The Accents deck is that lesson on its own, and it is the one to play first. Accents is the hard one: it pairs letters and marks with the sounds they make — é is "ay", è is "eh", ç is an s, a silent h blocks the liaison an English speaker will try to make — and because a bare accent has no meaning at all, that board can only be played against the sound. Read the mark, or you cannot say the word at all. A pair already made stays on the board faded; tap it to hear the word again.

If the words are shown but never spoken, this browser has no French voice installed. On Windows that is Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → Français, with the speech component ticked; on macOS and iOS it is System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → System Voice → Manage Voices. The board is fully playable read.
