How to play: the board deals each word twice — once as it is written, once as its reading. Tap a tile, then tap its partner: a pair goes in, pays 100 points, and is said aloud in Japanese. Every pair you make without a mistake multiplies the next one, up to five times over, and a wrong guess counts a mistake and puts the run back to nothing — the board ends only when every pair is matched. Clear it and the clock stops; each deck and size keeps its own best time. Eleven decks of 314 words in all. Kana is the match to learn on: it asks how a word is read, which is what Japanese asks of you every time you meet a kanji — 水 is みず, and knowing that is what lets you look it up, type it or say it. Rōmaji and English are there for a beginner and Mixed deals all three at once. Hiragana and Katakana are the two alphabets themselves, forty-six symbols apiece; a word written in kana is dealt against its rōmaji, since its reading would be the tile beside it. Long sounds is the hard one — it deals whole minimal pairs, おばさん against おばあさん and きて against きって, so the only thing telling the tiles apart is a sound held twice as long. A pair already made stays on the board faded; tap it to hear the word again.
